Can I get a free boiler through the boiler replacement scheme?

If you think you may be eligible, apply using the postcode search above.
Most of our customers qualify for a free boiler.
But even if you can’t access a free boiler, you may be able to get a part funded or heavily subsidised boiler. That means you’ll get some funding, but you’ll need to make a contribution towards the cost.
If you’re struggling with an old, inefficient boiler that keeps breaking down or costs a fortune to run, then this could be a way for you to solve the problem for good.

How the schemes work

The government has targets it needs to hit. These targets include reducing the UK’s carbon footprint and also cutting fuel poverty.
One of the ways they’re doing this is through the ECO or Energy Company Obligation scheme. It’s called that because the big energy companies have targets to hit too. The scheme is a collaboration between the government and the six biggest energy companies in the UK.
Everyone in the UK pays a small percentage extra on their energy bills, and this money is used to fund free boilers and insulation for low-income households and the most vulnerable members of our community.
As part of the boiler replacement scheme, you can have your old boiler replaced with a newer A-rated boiler. You may qualify for a free replacement boiler.

Most applicants qualify for a free boiler

There are no complicated terms and conditions and the boiler replacement scheme is not a loan scheme. This means if you do qualify, you don’t need to pay anything back.
In most cases, your new boiler will be supplied and installed at no cost to you. Sometimes you may be asked to make a contribution to the cost, but you will get all of the information you need before you decide whether to go ahead with the work.

How long will funding be available through the

free boiler replacement scheme?

This new phase of the ECO scheme is scheduled to run until March 2022.
But we are living in times of uncertainty. Government policy can change.
So if you are considering applying for a free replacement boiler, don’t put it off.

As well as boilers – gas, oil and LPG – many of our customers also qualify for free insulation.
This can make your home a lot warmer, especially when fitted alongside a new, more efficient boiler.

Improving your heating, and making sure you keep more of the heat inside your home,
can give you combined savings of up to £760 each year on your fuel bills.

Aside from saving money on your bills, since the average cost of a new boiler is £2700
it makes sense to take advantage of the free boiler replacement scheme while it is still available.

Will you really save on your heating bills with a new boiler?

According to the Energy Saving Trust – an independent body – a household that upgrades their old G-rated boiler to a modern A-rated boiler will knock up to £305 a year off their fuel bills.
That’s the figure for a detached house. In a semi-detached or end-of-terrace home you can save up to £200 each year, in a mid-terrace you can save up to £175 and in a flat up to £95.
On top of that, you can save up to £455 off your fuel bills by insulating your home. Find out whether you qualify for additional insulation when you have your free home survey.

How to tell if you need a new boiler

If your boiler is more than five years old, and is inefficient or faulty, then it’s worth looking at replacing it. For boilers newer than 5-years-old then it’s usually more cost effective to repair the boiler. You won’t be able to get a free replacement boiler if your boiler is less than 5-years-old.
Older boilers are often only around 65% efficient. So for every £1 you spend on heating, only 65p is heating your home. The other 35p is wasted.
A new A-rated boiler will be 90% efficient so 90p in every £1 you spend is heating your home. This is why a new boiler can save you money on your heating bills.
